HISTORY

He who has never heard of AWAZA before first needs to arm himself with the geographical map and find the Caspian Sea on it. The largest settlement of the Turkmen coast is the city of Turkmenbashi (formerly Krasnovodsk) located in a convenient bay. It has an extensive transport infrastructure and is rightfully called a sea gate of Turkmenistan. And very close to the city – just to the north, outside the gulf, there is a settlement of AWAZA located on the open sea coastline.
The settlement has always been a favorite place of rest for local residents and numerous visitors. The place is truly blessed: it has almost thirty kilometers of clean sandy beaches, the generous sun, salubrious air and warm sea. The efforts of modern linguists provide a version of the semantic meaning of a toponym «AWAZA» as an «edge singing waves». And everything on this land, from the standpoint of the natural grace and environmental purity, was just great. However, AWAZA was doomed to remain a little area without respective efforts to create a modern resort infrastructure.
For the first time, plans to transform the area and create a national tourist area (NTZ) were announced by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov In May 2007, when the city of Turkmenbashi hosted a summit of the heads of three states – Turkmenistan, Russia and Kazakhstan.
Having invited all interested parties to take part in the promising development project, the Turkmen President said his Government was prepared to invest at least $1 billion in the first phase of construction.
After a couple of months in July 2007 after disclosing the ambitious plans the first presentation of the national project took place. The imposing representation of foreign companies at this event very eloquently demonstrated the genuine interest of foreign capital in the prospects of effective investments in the resort business. The interest was supported by the assurances of the Turkmen government to provide incentives for investors, as well as the plans to improve the national legislation on the establishment of legal guarantees for businesses in accordance with international standards.
A year later, AWAZA is the most rapidly implemented project in Turkmenistan. The Government attaches exceptional significance to construction of the facilities and development of the infrastructure in AWAZA so long as the world-class resort on the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea is called upon to become, as it is often said there, an international tourist paradise. Completion of the project can boost the investment attractiveness and foster intensification of economic partnership between Turkmenistan and the world business community.

PERSPECTS

The construction works will be carried out in the tourist area till 2020 and pided into three equal stages. The first, in accordance with the Master Plan, will cover the 750-hectare area. A number of comfortable recreational centers designed for two thousand visitors in total are under construction on the order of the ministries and departments. The first of them received visitors in October 2009.
When making a journey by ropeway from the seafront one will be able to see the tourism and entertainment industry sites including an original theater of dancing fountains.
And if you look in the near future, your imagination can not accommodate all the original project offered by their designer. Take for example the plan to build a covered ski complex. No one had ever dared such a bold project so close to the south latitude of the city of Turkmenbashi.
In July 2010 according to the Decree of President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov a new phase of the National Tourist Area “AWAZA” development launched, within which a number of new recreational, sporting, cultural and entertainment centers, modern industry has greatly expanded sports and entertainment will be erected.

FIGURES AND FACTS

The NTZ “AWAZA” of 5000 hectares of total area, with the coastline stretching for 26 km with exceptionally clear marine water and nice beaches, is located on the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea - a unique, environmentally clear natural area, special geographical and climatic conditions of the coast, mineral springs and curative mud, favorable for the development of spa tourism and recreation.
The Master Plan envisages building of about 60 objects for tourist and recreational purposes, accommodation objects (hotels, cottages, villas), social and engineering infrastructure: yacht and golf clubs, catering networks (restaurants, cafes, bars, etc.), as well as camps for Children, amphitheaters, entertainment complexes, including aqua parks, attractions, objects of the gambling industry, trade and sport complexes (tennis stadium for 5000 spectators, stadium for 10000 people, dozens of mini sport grounds for volleyball, basketball, tennis and other sports in particular), and world class business center as well.

STEP BY STEP

The presentation of the first line of facilities in AWAZA resort took place exactly two years after the idea of transforming the Caspian Sea coast near the town of Turkmenbashi was put forward by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov.
Two of the hotels, «Vatanchi» and «Hazyna», standing on the shore of the sea, and «Charlak» hotel located within the city boundaries can in total accommodate six hundred guests at a time. The figure is not yet so impressive, but this is almost twice as much the capacity of the first two international-class hotels built on the coast a few years ago. And a new area of leisure facilities nears their completion. Now the possibility of accommodating holiday-makers in AWAZA will grow literally in a geometric series. The second phase of development of the sea coast provides for construction of half a dozen hotels and worldclass spas. A symbolic gold key to the coast, presented to the President of Turkmenistan by the constructors, has already opened the doors to the world of coziness, comfort and pleasant stay created by skilful hands of professionals.

In April 2010 new facilities and buildings were opened.

  • The new international airport equipped with latest technologies could serve 800 passengers each hour – citizens of our country and tourists from all over the world. With landing strip of the new airport 3,500 metres long and 60 metres wide it could receive all types of aircrafts. Modern air terminal in Turkmenbashi consisted of a number of facilities including the four-storey air terminal building, traffic control centre, fashionable VIP hall, parking bay, etc.
  • AWAZA State gas-turbine power station put into operation in Balkanabat.
  • New desalination plant with the capacity of 35,000 cubic metres of fresh water a day will improve water supply in the AWAZA national tourism area and Turkmenbashi town.
  • Newly built artificial navigable river running across the territory of the national tourism area with lakes and beaches is an important and large facility in AWAZA.

Financing of NTZ

Policy of “open doors”, pursued by President of Turkmenistan, with solid legislation and guaranty for protection of foreign investments, provides favorable conditions for foreign investors and partners, who are interested in long-term cooperation with Turkmenistan. Investment climate created here, is absolutely special - the state provides a number of economic benefits and guarantees, the special legal regime of entrepreneurial business acting here.
According to the author of the idea of establishing the National Tourist Zone "Awaza" President of Turkmenistan - honorable Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov - it will be the first point from which acquaintance to Turkmenistan will begin.

The money invested for building (reconstructing):

  • highways,
  • purchasing of road-building techniques
  • reconstruction of the sea port
  • water supply, sewage and recycling systems
  • world class resorts and hotels
  • recreation and entertainment objects – aqua parks, yacht- and sport clubs, restaurants, different leisure-time entertainments, trade centers.

TOURISM OBJECTS

Tourism is one of the youngest and very promising sectors of national economy. The centuries-old cultural traditions of the Turkmen peoples, the persity of the natural landscapes, the historical and archeological landmarks that the Turkmen land is rich in – all that arouse intense interest worldwide and create the unique requisites for development of spa and resort industry, ecological, archeological, ethnographical and sports tourism.
It is not exaggeration to say that Turkmenistan located on the caravan routes of the Great Silk Road connecting East and West, Europe and Asia over the centuries can be called an open-air museum. Anau, Altyn-depe, Gurganj, Mashat-Misrian, Serahs, Gonur-depe and Ancient Merv, Kunya Urgench and Nisa inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and hundreds of the other ancient monuments testify to a profound contribution that the Turkmen people made to the treasury of world civilization and amaze the historians and archeologists from all over the world.
The nature of Turkmenistan is unique. The natural ecosystems of the Karakum Desert, which have no analogues in Eurasia – Badkhyz, Repetek, the Kugitang caves of remarkable beauty, the dinosaurs’ plateau, the picturesque gorges of the Kopetdag Mountains, the subtropical oases of Sumbar – all that make our country extremely attractive for those fond of traveling and exploring the world.
The Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea coast has the vast opportunities for developing sap and resort industry and ecological tourism. The nature favoured this part of the Turkmen land endowing it with the mild climate, golden sand beaches of many kilometres, the lovely seascapes, the noisy bird bazaars in the unique wet lands of universal value in the Khazar State Reserve.
Nowadays, the AWAZA national tourism area is being created on the Caspian Sea coast. Closely interrelated with the short-term plans of Turkmenistan’s development the AWAZA National Project is of paramount importance not only for the Caspian region as well as the whole country as it became the reference point of a new approach to realization of the country’s profound natural and economic potential through attracting heavy foreign investment in recreation industry and tourism, national social and economic development. Providing the new opportunities for wide international co-operation the AWAZA Project will enable to rum the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea into Mecca for tourists form all over the world.
In fact the coastal region possesses not only a special geographical position, exclusively pure sea water, magnificent sandy beaches and a soft climate, numerous mineral sources and medical dirts, but also the richest reserves and persity of natural resources in the Caspian region, whose territory has huge hydrocarbon resources, deposits of mineral raw material for the chemical industry, the building industry - an important element for attracting foreign investment.

For tourists wanting to know more about Turkmenistan, its history, culture and everyday life, hiking trails to historic and natural monuments of the region will be organized. To date, the cruise itineraries to visit the picturesque islands in the Caspian Sea are designed. They are:

  • The Ogurchinsky Island, 100 km from AWAZA inhabited by gazelles, flamingo and other wildlife listed in the Red Book;
  • Karshi settlement, 80 km of AWAZA with curative radon sources;
  • Gyzylsu island, 12 km of AWAZA, known for the beauty of its nature, where construction of tourist facilities and restaurants is planned in the future.
  • Exotic tourism with horse and camel riding along the Caspian seaside sightseeing
  • Caspian sea perfectly fits for ping. For example at the TARTA cape there are underwater caves just 100 m from the coast with rich underwater world of Caspian sea in 12-15 m depth.
  • Among the objects of health tourism: balneary source Kara-Chagyl 130 km from the resort Avaza and Molla-Kara resort. Molla-Kara operates year-round, treatment is an alternation of mud applications and natural brine baths, main therapeutic factors of the resort are sodium chloride brine and sulfide-silt mud . Similar mud and water are available only at the resort Saki (Crimea) and the Dead Sea (Israel). Balneary Kara-Chagyl located next to Molla-Kara, it differs by healing properties of water, bustling out of the ground. For the first time the information about its unique properties have appeared in the 1895-1896 years.
