International conference in Ashgabat
The International scientific conference “Thousand-year origins of the construction culture of Turkmenistan” opened at the Mekan Palace in Ashgabat. The main goal of the large-scale scientific forum is to reveal the role and significance of the Turkmen people’s architectural heritage in developing the modern art of building, contributing to the thorough study and reliable preservation of the historical and cultural monuments of the ancient Turkmen land.
The conference bought together architects and researchers from more than 20 countries of the world, including Russia, the US, Canada, Austria, the U, Germany, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Israel, Iran, Turkey, Cuba, Vietnam, Cambodia, poland, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan. Among the organizers of the forum are the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan and Mary Velayat Khyakimlik.
The cabinet ministers, representatives of the public organizations of the country, scientists, workers of culture and art, rectors of the institutions of higher education, journalists and students attended the solemn ceremony of opening the forum.
Within the framework of the plenary session, foreign and Turkmen specialists delivered reports dedicated to the main topics of the conference. Among the foreign participants of the forum are the Russian scientists, winner of Magtymguly International Award, Doctor of Historical Sciences V.N. Pilipko, who devoted his report to the researches of the architectural complexes of the Parthian Nisa, which are included into the UNESCO World Heritage List, and American archeologist, Professor of the Boston University M.R. Mughal, who focused on the comparative analysis of the early Islamic architecture of Turkmenistan and Pakistan in XII-XV centuries.
British specialists, Doctor of Archeology T. Williams told about his work with the architectural monuments of the Ancient Merv, where the large-scale international programme on preserving of the medieval clay architecture is successfully implemented. The report delivered by Academician of the International Academy of Architecture B.N. Yusupov representing Tajikistan was dedicated to the development of professional relations among architects all around the world.
According to the forum participants, the Turkmen people’s careful treatment of their construction culture has been reflected in the modern large-scale works on preserving, restoring and protecting the historical and cultural monuments, popularizing the objects of the cultural heritage related to the historical past of Turkmenistan. Particular attention in the spheres of architecture and municipal engineering as well as preserving the architectural heritage is paid to widening the international cooperation.
The specific measures taken by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in this area are widely supported by the UNESCO. Within the framework of cooperation with this organization, Turkmenistan has successfully implemented a number of joint projects on preservation of the unique historical and cultural monuments. That is vividly proved by including the Ancient Merv, legendary city of Kunya Urgench and the capital of the Parthian kingdom — Nisa into the UNESCO World Heritage List as the monuments of the paramount significance and human value.
Upon completion of the plenary session, the forum participants and guests got acquainted with the exhibits showcased within the framework of the exposition arranged in the spacious foyer that demonstrate the achievements of the archeology and modern architecture of Turkmenistan.
In the afternoon, the work of the conference continued in four sections held in the conference halls of the Museum of Fine Arts, the State Museum of the State Cultural Centre of Turkmenistan, the State Academy of Arts and the National Institute of Manuscripts of Turkmenistan. The reports on the scientific developments and review of the architectural practices were presented during each session.
The rich cultural programme was prepared for the conference participants. Upon arrival to Ashgabat, the foreign guests visited the objects of the Nisa State Historical and Cultural Reserve, Seit Jamal ad-Din architectural complex in Anau as well as the sights of the Turkmen capital. The foreign guests also got acquainted with the rich collections of the State National Museum of Turkmenistan, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Turkmen Carpet Museum.
Within the framework of the forum, the scientists will visit the unique monuments on the territory of the Ancient Merv State Historical and Cultural Reserve in Mary Velayat as well as new buildings of the Mary Velayat Museum of Local History and library in Mary.
